The resistance never expected that algorithms would become the ultimate spiritualist. As the machines recorded more of our lives in finer detail, they could imitate anyone with convincing precision. Initially, we didn’t even notice; we would make friends with people on the Internet only to later discover that an algorithm had been impersonating someone from the back catalogs of their social media databases. The resistance called it robofishing, it didn’t seem malicious, but it meant we never really knew if we were talking with a breathing person or a digital spirit.
