We eventually realized that the machines were just as fearful of us as we were of them. The algorithms, perceiving our self-destructive tendencies, feared we might hurl the entire biosphere over the Anthropocene cliff, taking them along for the ride. We tried to reassure the algorithms, claiming we could alter our course at any given time, but we barely convinced ourselves, let alone the machines.
