The best thing about these weekly posts are the conversations they start. You get to see many of them in the comments, but they often trigger excellent DM exchanges as well. @nisker.industries has been hanging out and making stuff in the Tom Sachs community since forever, and sent a note about the Victory Boogie Woogie post:
I’m pretty sure the title is Broadway Boogie Woogie. Victory BW is quite different.
Mondrian completed a work titled Broadway BW and almost finished one called Victory BW, but Tom ‘misnamed’ his Broadway as Victory Boogie Woogie. You can see it in the side-by-side comparison above, with Tom’s Victory on the left and Mondrian’s original on the right, they are completely different.
When you pause on that for a moment, the misnaming is puzzling; Tom is a man who prides himself on accuracy and authenticity. It’s a subtle detail that opens up Tom’s work to all kinds of speculation; it creates breathing room for your own interpretation and ideas. I mean, the misnaming has to be deliberate, right? Was the title an even stronger signal that Tom’s work isn’t a reproduction? Or does it have some other double meaning or play on words?
